Refractory grade bauxite plants will stop production

BEIJING 7 May 08 – Smelters in Shanxi, the main production area of refractory grade bauxite, will shut down in the following weeks and some of them have stopped production. Many consumers have socked enough inventories for the production in the next two months. And now the price is still firm, participants reported.

A trader from Tangshan received offers for 1,500t of burned bauxite lumps 86%min at RMB1,500/t (USD214/t) ex works, and the material can be delivered 30 days later. With the climax of buying in last two months, the prices have climbed to a peak temporarily.

Some smelters will gradually suspend producing in May, so it is difficult to get 1,000t of bauxite from one plant, according to the source.

A Chongqing-based smelter hasn’t fulfilled their contracts signed in March yet, with more than 10,000t of the materials to be delivered in May. The source concluded bauxite sands 0-1mm,1-3mm 86-87%min bulk density at 3.2%min at USD430/t FOB CMP in late April. “From mid-April, we stopped signing contracts with the foreign customers as we will not have enough materials to supply,” explained the source.

Except the above reason, the source has no extra export licenses to export either. “We are waiting for the next round of tender of bauxite now,” said the source, predicting the price may be stable in June, since many consumers have stocked enough inventories.
