Vanadium is an alternative battery storage technology that is still relatively untapped. In today's climate it is a Lithium world but as we require electrical storage for home solar sells, grid systems, and other power storage systems Vanadium will be the way to go. It is much more economical.

This is worth a quick read too.

You are unlikely to see Vanadium in cell-phone battery at the moment. Vanadium isn't the place for it but that is only because the ability to harness that as a sealed dry cell battery hasn't been developed - yet. Vanadium storage is generally 'redox', a bit like traditional car batteries. The benefits of scaling and life are massive, just like the article posted by Exberliner1 says.

I think as the Lithium demand increases, so will Vanadium, and the research into Vanadium. When you buy an electric vehicle, companies like Tesla package the battery size according to cost. Double the Lithium battery capacity = double the cost. This cost factor is not true for Vanadium.

@Alby118 I suspect BHP and Rio have their own Vanadium separation facility, or maybe they buy Vanadium from somewhere for their own use.

Let's not forget that Vanadium is also commonly used in steel making.
Only a small percentage of Vanadium (<5%) needs to be added to harden steel.

Examples include High-speed tool steels (HSS) such as drill bits, gears, saw blades, chisels, knives, surgical instruments.

The list goes on... car crank shafts, oil and gas pipelines, engines, reinforcing bars for building and construction.

So imagine the price increase in steel once Vanadium becomes a highly sourced material.
