    If Gina is the "loaner" ... no she still owns the shares so does not have to notify.

    Apparently it's this system of loaning shares for shorting that creates income for the likes of the superannuation funds who are charged with holding sufficient capital to cover their worse case scenario. So shorting happens through the larger holders ... and it's not just about ARU.

    Say a hedge fund wants to short the market ... they will take a bucket of shares from some bank who has the ability to loan the shares off the individual owners ... so the bank makes a percentage with virtually no risk, the share owner gets an income and the hedge fund can play silly buggers when they like, profiting on the downside if they get it right.

    Gold stocks will all be interesting today.
