You did not elaborate on your previous volunteer service. But, as you would probably be aware, the word 'volunteer' implies they these people are not paid for the work they do. Now, unless you happen to be retired or independently wealthy, most volunteers have to hold down a job. Now, as you would also be aware, many, private employers have issues with their staff taking time off with little or no notice to undertake their volunteer duties, no matter how noble it is. In other words, volunteer emergency services type organisations are quite used to having a low response rate when the call is made, especially on weekdays when most people are working. Even on weekends, or nights volunteer members have other commitments that often take precedence.
So this issue about one member being compelled to attend against their will should be a complete nonsense. If it's not, it's a sad reflection on that organisation's ability to recruit volunteers for what should be a very fulfilling role.
