The Australian side has been bowling "chin music" to the opposition tail for at least 6 years. Physically wounding the opposition batsman (particularly the tail) has been a prime tactic. I heard a conversation between Jonathan Agnew and Mitchell Johnson in the 1st test during the first test, in which Johnson said his main aim when bowling short was to hurt the opposition batsman. Archer himself was aggressively targeted in England's first innings. I suspect goes a fair way to explaining his indifference to Smith's wellbeing. He was glad he nailed him.
