Mackeral, we've been going about 5 minutes bit early to call "too hard" dont you think?
Carbo are a well established player and their business is in proppant product AND in well extraction software and consulting. At the end of the day they have a range of products to sell and a group that make money from telling you which ones to buy. In regards to the latter, they are not the only ones that do this, and there are independent people who will make an unbiased recommendation on the correct proppant when they do fracture planning.
Consulting groups in any business always throw up a lot of issues to consider, this causes fear uncertainty and doubt, and they proffer themselves as the guys to trust to resolve them. In practice, these are little hard spherical balls that hopefully dont deform or powder up too much when crushed so the juice can flow well in a seam. An independant consultant will always do tests like the above to work out what the right propppant would be. In some cases, LWP's may not be the one and in many cases it might be depending on the pre-assessments. Yes, we are unlikely to get a recommendation from Carbo's consultants, it would be like an IBM consulting guy recommending Apple.
