Asia’s new LNG-import markets

Five new countries in Southeast and south Asia – Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand – have become LNG importers since 2011.
Momentum for a new wave of imports into Asia started that year, when Thailand took its first cargoes. Since then, the International Group of LNG Importers (GIIGNL) has noted significant demand growth, here and in Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore.
Now, as our latest infographic shows, several other countries – Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam – plan to import their first cargoes.
Seven large-scale import terminals have been developed in south and Southeast Asia. Their total capacity stands at around 27 mta. At year-end 2016, an additional 16.5 mta was under construction.
Southeast Asia’s new LNG-import infrastructure includes floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), new onshore terminals and conversion of former export terminals, such as Arun in Indonesia.
By 2025, the region could develop up to around 60 mta of new LNG regasification infrastructure. The combination of new FSRU and FSU solutions and growing demand for gas for power generation is likely to persuade Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam to import their first cargoes.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, EWC is nearing completion of a one-tank onshore import terminal in Pagbilao and an FSRU project has been proposed in Batangas.
