Words only have meaning if they are read in "context". Other than for things such as weights and measures .... everything we say must be interpreted in the context of how, where , why, when and to whom we are saying it.

I always go back to the fact that Muhammed (a man who never claimed to be perfect) allowed his wives to do far more than the modern day Wahhabi Cult. How can that be so? Maybe it is because Muhammed was illiterate and what is written has been filtered through the interpretation of many others. I could say the same for most religions.

Regardless there is no commonly accepted "literal" truth for anything including Islam.

Yes, absolutely. To be a Muslim one must believe that the Quran is the literal and inerrant word of God revealed to Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h). Those who do not accept this belief do not qualify as believers. The aforementioned is not something that Muslim scholars have invented but is stated internally within the Quran itself.
