"Being in a sparsely populated area, the MRO is ideal for radio astronomy. But powering sensitive instruments 350 km from the closest usable grid connection presents quite a challenge.
To protect the radio quiet environment of the MRO, the feeder cable is shielded and buried to prevent leakage of radio frequency interference (RFI), and equipment required to operate the solar arrays and the battery system is being built into containers with high-spec RFI shielding features. CSIRO’s specialist engineers worked closely with EMC’s design staff to design and implement workable RFI shielding solutions.
This project is supported by the WA Government through its Royalties for Regions program, and the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund."
