1. Carbon dioxide and methane trap energy that enters the atmosphere causing it to heat and to heat the oceans. This used to be known as the greenhouse effect. There are natural cycles sure, but humans are accelerating this one big time.
2. We know from measurements that this is happening. Record temperatures and melting icecaps visually confirm this.
Stop thinking of this as a temperature rise. We all know that a few degrees doesn't make any difference to us as people. Think of this as an increase in energy in the atmosphere and oceans.
3. Global weather is driven by the energy in the system. The patterns are changing and becoming more extreme more often. Think of what happens when you boil a pot of water by heating it. As you add more energy (heat) it starts to boil and seethe and form currents. This is what we are doing to our atmosphere. There is a point where this becomes a feedback loop and runs away.
It will not seriously affect most of us in our lifetime, but left unchecked global food shortages and famines will become more likely, there will be more and more extreme disasters, your insurance premiums will increase - if you can still get insurance and much more.
Later generations will not thank us. Sitting in a wealthy country like Australia, it is easy to imagine that this is not happening - but it is.
