As of 10 Dec. the short interest stood at 2.53% which is a record. It equates to approx 3.5M shares short in the stock.

A ratio to calculate is the 'short to cover' number.... which is how many shares short outstanding divided by the average volume. ASM's average volume is something around 700,000 shares traded per day... if the short interest decided to exit it would take a minimum of 5 trading days to do so.

The initial shorting for this recent episode begins Nov 29 and there was a very high volume day Nov 30 when 1M shares were short sold (probably at an average price above $13).

I do not know anything about the mechanics of short selling... the only thing I would hazard a guess about is this is accumulation tactics by an institutional buyer. I doubt they would place themselves in a position in which they become forced buyers. However, I do think it adds a little buying pressure to the stock once the price has bottomed... which it appeared to do around the $10 mark.
