It's all smoke and mirrors at the moment, and the HFT is very aggressive (for lack of a better word). I placed a buy order last week that was very close to the SP at the time, and instantly the HFT moved the SP away. I wasn't particularly concerned whether the order got filled, and ended up cancelling it at the end of the day, but it definitely looked like the HFT had been set up to try and avoid buy orders being filled. Obviously I can't be sure that that is the case, but that's how it looked. Also, I think it's pretty clear that most of the shares that are being shorted are being bought by the same party, and it's possible that whoever is doing the shorting has a significant amount of shares just sitting in another account, but are choosing not to cover in order to keep holders guessing as to what is going on. As I said, it's all smoke and mirrors, and probably a good time to just tune out and wait to hear from ASM.
