It might be my imagination... but... I have seen a similar buying pattern in the past.... buy volume one day then let the stock rest for a day or 3 .... buy in volume for a day.... let it rest... etc.
The trading pattern has changed and the attempts to suppress the price by selling into the bid have been soaked up... it isn't retail absorbing the shorts (and my suspicion is the shorts are low on ammo).
To offer my guess (fwiw)... I think ASM was initially short sold to raise funds for an offsetting buy elsewhere in the market (hence the aggressive protection by the shorts of their position)... but now, a genuine buyer has taken an interest. If that happens to be true then the shorts have a real problem on their hands.
It might be my imagination... but... I have seen a similar...
