Van Eck runs a passive rare earth/strategic metals ETF (REMX). They bought because ASM reached a market cap, relative to that of other RE/SM companies, that satisfied the criteria of being included in the ETF. They sold when ASM's market cap fell below a certain threshold. If ASM's market cap increases enough to satisfy the same criteria once again, Van Eck will buy on market and ASM will once again be included in REMX. ASM's SP has a long way to go for that to happen, though.
