Often the volume does steadily decrease towards the end of a downtrend. My take on this is it's the non long term investors eventually giving up in succession. After that it is people testing the waters thinking they can put a buy order in and let it get filled eventually, so less market action over longer durations. Buyer seller standoff in a way. As soon as their patience runs out or they see price movement they put orders in at market, and then other people see the price action and the volume starts increasing exponentially. A less scientific way of looking at this period of in between is the presence of downrampers, charlatan Technical Analysts and bot activity during open and close.
