Sodium ion batteries will certainly be a thing, but i don't think they will replace lithium. The energy density is much lower, so while they are safer and cheaper, the performance in a car where power to weight ratio is crucial makes them less than ideal, especially in range per charge. My understanding is they also have a shorter life span but don't have numbers on how long/the difference there. Everything i can find points to the next Tesla model (model 2) being a lithium based battery, though using less lithium i think, and id be surprised if it holds to 2025 release. Toyota pushing their solid state lithium batteries. there is plenty of dollars going into improving lithium batteries still, and with so much of the market still ICE, plenty of room for other tech to co-exist.
