Both Posco and LG have announced mass production status, I’m sure if i dug deep enough I could find production rates but it is insignificant.
Single crystal is just a case of making the cathode material smooth and spherical, previously they were polycrystal designs which are lumpy and were splitting causing issues such as thermal runaway.
Not only have they worked out how to stop this, they have also worked out a cost effective solution that is scalable using existing infrastructure.
This allows higher nickel batteries with higher nickel density that are safer with increased cycle life.
My question is, why wouldn’t they incorporate it? It’s a huge step forward and this technology will most likely feed into solid state design going forward.
