Indonesia has a rapidly expanding population, and the needs of a local population and environment will always come a distant second in national priorities.
Indonesia, like China is determined to become a first world economy, and the nickel industry will be the launch pad for a modern industrial base for a rich economy - coal plants typically have 50 yr life spans, as well as the rest of the refining capacity being created so, Indonesia will continue to be the world's leading producer of (dirty) nickel indefinitely .... note POSCO, one of the supposed off take partners for QPM is a major investor.
Watching this should confirm ones fatalism for the Australian nickel industry for the foreseeable future IMHO.
