Here's the problem for gas - massive subsidies for "alternative energy companies" that ex-senior politicians as highly paid "senior executives" ensure massive government support for "clean" "environmentally responsible" (sic) energy projects .....
The combination of relentless (false) propaganda, law fare, restrictive planning, "Indigenous Issues" and subsidies will make it impossible for gas to compete and hence will be a massive disincentive for long term investments. Without new investments, old projects will wither and die - in this many gas projects and plants wont be much different from old coal fired plants which are being retired early for lack of serious backers.
