Then 2 months later try to rehire them. Some having left the area, some stopped trusting the company, and the community feeling a bit more in the protesters favour.
Or, based on management's inside knowledge, they feel that work has already begun (most recent notice being 'cashflow this quarter'), and they're not planning to do something crazy like fire everybody.
