I had dinner last night with a broker from a major house. I raised the topic of the ASX reported shorts table. He laughed and said it was rubbish. He said that by the end of the day, most brokers had no idea what they'd shorted on behalf of clients and that back office rarely attempted to follow it through. He said the figures were rubbish, weeks out of date or simply made up.

He also said that when they close a short, no one reports it.

I guess what I took from it was that the figures on shorting are loose and should be taken as a guide only.

I am hoping BSL gets hammered today as it may be a re-entry possibility. However, I would expect a volatile few weeks as this has been on the cards (Ireland debt, US economy) for weeks.
