I understand why you may think what you do..it makes sense 'rationally'...
...but u are way way way off the mark. i live in sydney too...i can explain. do not want to post here given my friends at asic.
but...forget looking at the data on shorts...it is totally meaningless. It may be meaningful for 'retail' traders etc..as in they report it..but they do not report when they buy back..and the 'wholesale mkt' or instos, hedge funds, prop traders, facilitators, index arb traders, option traders, portfolio traders...that trade probably 80% plus of every major stocks volume every day...diff 'rules'..
...so i know, believe me...that sh int data..is meaningless.
