    Small Ordinaries index closes out last century at 2157 (Dec 30 1999)

    Small Ordinaries index today is 1956

    Of course this index is rebalanced every quarter, the winners go into the top 200, the losers get booted out.

    Compare that to the Russell 2000 (US small cap index). Same period it went from 504 to 1174.

    Buy and hold Aussie small caps over the long term? History suggests that on average you'll underperform. Better off trading them.
