It's a lot more noticeable on small market cap stocks. When the usual volume is down and the few shares purchased can make a significant change over the period of a week or two, the BOT's can pull the price down significantly by just throwing a few shares for sale at a low price, I think the BOT's computer (which is ASX based & executes instantly) then also buys the one or two shares at the lower price which leaves the impression of a lower share value, when the BOT's pull it down far enough stop losses are hit and the price falls further. Then the BOT's algorithm tells it to place buy orders. I watch one of my stocks market depth getting hit with $50.00 sales continually all day, the sales were on the high side so obviously trying to push price up. I'm pretty sure the whole purpose of the BOT algorithms is to attempt to either increase or decrease a shares value & purchase and sell shares at the right times throughout the cycle.
