I think you’ll find those daily figures represent the number of transactions involving shorting - but not just those that represent shorts sold, it includes shares bought back to cover prior shorts. If you know a way to determine how many of those transactions are sales and how many are purchases you’ll be ahead of everyone else in the market. The figure is pretty much useless - you need to wait for figures from a service such as Shortman (3 to 4 trading days delayed) to know what happened.
