You all raise an interesting point. I had not given it any thought since it all happened, but perhaps there is some mystery?
Back when ALB launched their bid it was stated that JP Morgan would provide all of the finance for the takeover. Later, and I think I may have commented then, when the "sale" went through, it was to JPM who I understood were receiving the shares in a block trade and intended to on-sell them. But perhaps they were in effect warehousing the shares and selling some to cover financial commitments made by ALB to JPM. Maybe they could not get the price demanded by ALB for all of the shares and the residual were later transferred back or perhaps the holding company for the shares was sold = no later trade of shares took place...but maybe now those shares are effectively still owned by ALB. I really don't know. But I also think it is mostly academic to us, but it could also have been a source of loaned shares for the shorters.
regards
