Whilst AS may be "long", this lot aren't averse to contributing to the Short slush pool - subsequently/immediately lending these shares out to others - Be it their "other" hand (left hand/right hand BS) or others entities to short.
As long as they get their short fees and their shares returned at some stage - They are happy to screw the market! As far as they are concerned its a LongShort WIN WIN for themselves. They are also informed early/at the table when if cheeky M&A turns up. They do it with multiple shares on ASX.
