just doing a little research on Google and it appears companies like Cbus Super has a 'self managed' option that gives you greater control over your money and where asx 300's come into play ... perhaps your friends are in this type of fund
mine is completely self managed and I set up the trust document to allow all shares, gold etc etc ... it can also be changed at any given time to include other options - obviously prior to purchasing them
