What do doctors think about rapid, point of care or at home HIV tests? ( My question on Quora )
Edward G. Dudley-Robey, M.D., Certificate Medicine and Healthcare, Harvard University Answered
While the Eliza tests done in those settings have a longer window then a DNA PCR study (6mo vs 21 day) they are great for non-high risk screening. Fast, easy & inexpensive is exactly what you want in a general screening exam. High risk patients (sex workers, IV drug users, etc..) may be better served by DNA PCR screening but the ordering physician would know how to screen for risk factors.
