    Hi @All,

Billions in taxes for Tesla's battery factory
Tesla can count on German tax billions for its planned battery plant in Grünheide, Brandenburg. The US automaker is one of eleven companies that have won public funding as part of the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) program for cell production. The Federal Ministry of Economics has so far left open how high the total grant will be. From government circles there was talk of a single-digit billion amount. The state of Brandenburg will contribute an estimated third of the amount. It is noteworthy that Tesla was awarded an IPCEI grant at all. The program was originally launched in 2014 with the aim of “increasing the competitiveness of Europe” and “countering the distorting activities of other regions of the world in this technology area”. The aim of the program is a functioning, European ecosystem for battery innovation and production, according to various announcements. Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier spoke last week of a “model example of forward-looking industrial policy”.This suggests that German and European companies in particular should be strengthened in competition with China and the USA in order not to be dependent on these two great powers for a key technology of the future such as battery cells. Now, of all things, the largest competitor of the German and European car manufacturers has been awarded the funding. A company against which BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler should actually be prepared. But Altmaier apparently has Europe in mind. "The lead of the Asian manufacturers is great and enormous," he said. But with the newly approved projects, the chances are good that 30 percent of global battery cell production will be in Europe in the future. The federal government's three billion would trigger investments of over 13 billion euros in this country. Together with companies that are working on cell housings, material for cathodes and anodes and recycling concepts, a “battery ecosystem with more than 10,000 jobs” will emerge in the coming years. So far, only Asian companies have been producing battery cells for the electromobile age. For example, VW, Daimler and BMW have secured cells from South Korean and Chinese manufacturers for double-digit billions each by the middle of the decade. After that, however, much is open. There are scenarios in which corporations could keep supply tight and dictate prices. As a result, up to 100 gigawatt hours would be missing in Europe alone in 2025. That corresponds to the capacity for two million mid-range electric cars. With a lot of money, politicians are trying to build European production facilities by 2025 and create a closed value chain for the automotive industry.Tesla, BMW and Porsche are the only car manufacturers in this country to receive IPCEI funding. BMW receives money for improving lithium-ion technology and for participating in the development of solid-state batteries. With custom cells in Tübingen, Porsche wants to develop and produce high-performance cells with high energy density and short charging times. In Salzgitter, VW is building a cell factory with Northvolt from Sweden that will produce batteries for up to 500,000 cars a year from 2024.
