I agree that freedom of belief, without fear of sanction, is the best may for a society to conduct itself.
I find the philosophical underpinnings of christianity, for instance, summed up in the statement "do unto others....", an attractive concept.
However, not sure about your statement on longevity of a religous practice.
Longevity does not necessarily has any correlation with its validity.
Longevity can often just be a function of the political/commercial/military success of a group with those beliefs.
But if we accept the argument, how long?
