It is no surprise to learn actress Gwyneth Paltrow starts the day with an almond-milk smoothie or that ex-PM David Cameron is partial to almond milk on his breakfast cereal. It is frighteningly fashionable to ditch cows’ milk. Sales of non-dairy milks – soy, rice, almond, coconut, hemp, rice and oat – have tripled in two years, says market research group Mintel.

The trouble is, say dieticians, these alternatives are inferior in every way. Most, with the exception of soy, have a much lower protein content, many have added sugar to make them palatable and several have woeful amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Rice milk even contains arsenic.

“If you can have regular cows’ milk that’s the best thing,” says Rebecca.

Why are we shunning milk? Almost 12 million of us think we are lactose intolerant but this is highly unlikely. Doctors say the number of people who suffer from lactose intolerance is far lower – probably only 0.01 per cent of the white European population.

New research from China shows those who struggle with dairy could be reacting to a protein called A1. When they swap to a cows’ milk containing only the A2 protein, which is found in Guernsey herds and the trademarked a2 milk, they report fewer gut problems. They also had improved brain function.

“We don’t know exactly why at the moment, which is why I’m conducting more research into this,” said Professor Xiao-Yang Sheng of Shanghai’s XinHua Hospital, during a recent visit to the UK. “Milk is an important nutritional food, especially because of the calcium content. That’s why A2 milk could be so important.”
