I filled out the forms, Commsec sent them into the ether, and the end result is I had an account with Pershing - you would have to create a login identity as one has to do with say, Link Market Services. With Link, an account is created when you purchase a share that is registered with them, but you still have to create a login identity before you can access the account.

In another case, I ended up with shares where the custodian was AST Financial. I simply logged into AST and requested the shares be transferred to Pershing.

It is clear to me now. You don't buy and sell the real shares, but the depositary notes or receipts. That is why you have AST Financial as the custodian.

There is no need for a custodian if you buy and sell the real shares.

I am sure about that.
