From what I can tell in what I've looked at, moving holdings to CMC as you describe and converting later, seems simplest way to do it, as I spoke to CMC and Commsec, and both said with the situation regarding AKE, that if the merge happens neither could receive the US listed shares if chosen over CDI. Thanks for the idea.
