A human ecologist, William Rees, has worked out a system of productive biocapacity. The concept of carry capacity of earth is how many people the earth can sustain. Rees has divided the earth's productivity divided by the amount of people. If the earth's biocapacity is used fairly each person should have an allocation of 2 global hectares each. Most Africans use little more than half of this, the average Indian uses half of this per person, China uses the 2 hectares per person, the British using over 5 global hectares and average Americans more than 4 times their fair share.
