Take a look at the trade agreement signed between China and the USA last year to diffuse the trade tensions and you will see that this was not only predictable, it was stated in the agreement. The agreement also indicates why China and Australia are having problems in other commodity areas (despite political commentary to the contrary).
My memory is a bit fuzzy on the agreement but I believe p94 holds the dreaded annexure 6.1 table which clearly outlines Chinese trade shifting to the USA in areas such as coal, barley, wine etc across a two year period. China has had to divert their purchasing to the USA from somewhere, and that somewhere is us.
