I do not support the stamp duty rates in Victoria as they stand now. My point is the introduction of a stamp duty concession at the top of the market is a very bad move. The impact that such a concession will have will be negative and devestating to the property market in Melbourne by further over heating it than it already is. It will cause more pain to the people it is designed to help. Take the FHOG as an example. First home buyers could receive a grant of up to $14000 but had to pay an extra $50000 to $80000 to buy the property. They were actually worse off. The FHOG is one of the reasons why we are seeing such rediculous prices at the moment, so just imagine what a stamp duty concession would do. These type of concessions should be introduced at the bottom of the market or during a flat period so as to have the best effect, not at the top. It's just a vote winning scam by the Liberals without giving any thought to the consequences.
