The language of the Taiwanese is fatalistic. The reality is nobody wants open warfare. Also likely they will suffer cyberattacks on key infrastructure then it will be a walk-in. It's a variation on the quaint practice of conducting sieges. When the people give up and are desperate you can just walk in and take over. The rest, the show of air power, the missiles being sent around the world, are propaganda for the home crowd in China who are restive following the gathering collapse of the housing speculative boom, and associated shadow banking. Nobody really expects the Chinese to use the missiles against Taiwan. Cyberwarfare is where it's at, which is why the key component of the AUKUS agreement is not subs, which may never be built. It's protection in cyberspace.

Agreed about Xi. Niall Ferguson said that, he's just playing the nationalist card to curry favour for himself and for his party, because they are in a precarious situation politically, and don't want to lose power.
