THE housing shortage crisis is worsening, with another slide in housing starts in the December quarter making 2006 the worst year since the post-GST slump of 2001.
The Bureau of Statistics estimates that in trend terms, commencements are now at a five-year low, with just 37,357 houses and units started in the quarter.
