Patterns are a footprint of buying / selling volumes and are often used by institutions for entries and exits as well, therefore nothing to be scoffed at.
The main problem with patterns is people do a 5 minute search on the internet and think they understand them. Secondly at times they can fail one needs to be aware of that.
However overall combining patterns, trends and volume can be very foretelling of the direction the stock is about to go.
