If you interested in the smart meter rollout, I would recommend listening to Ausnet's half year results webcast date 12-Nov-14 (from 27 minute mark). It discusses the smart meter (AMI) remediation plan for the 300,000 meters not able to connect to the WiMAX network. Slide 27 indicates the possibility of another network technology other than 3G (and WiMAX). It was interesting that the presenter did not name the alternate technology. Whilst the presentation indicates vendor negotiations are still in progress, the capex budget for second half of FY15 already includes $37M for AMI remediation.
So is an alternative to 3G really an option? I don't know the location of 300,000 meters that are not connected to the network but I can't see Ausnet using mesh or PLC solution, they don't have the time to test it and they can't afford another failure.
I would assume a decision will be made soon A) if they wish to complete the remediation program by Dec 2016 and B) If they have budgeted for some of the expense.
NTC could be announcing this contract extension in time for Xmas. To put it into a financial perspective, the contract should be worth approximately $30M, but maybe at a lower gross margin.
