BY nature Colin Bell is an optimist. As equity markets continue to get pummelled and deeper despair sets in, the Bell Financial Group executive chairman invokes the Pollyanna principle -- the latest rout means that the recovery is that much closer.

Two Fridays ago, when the local sharemarket plunged 2.7 per cent on renewed fears of a Greek exit from the euro, Bell surmised that the stampede of sellers reeked of desperation: people "just wanting to get out".
