With 15 million cards on issue, the average debt has reached about $3,333 per card, the figures show.

Doesn't sound like the end of the world to me. My credit card can be in debt up to $10K at any particular time but it is paid off each month. More and more people use credit cards to pay for everyday items, I do, almnost every bill.

Don't forget our population is also increasing. 20.3 mill in 2005, estimated 22.8mill today, 12% increase. Population is also ageing meaning potentially more adults in Australai than previously.

The raw statistics can be very misleading.
