We have a house built in Bendigo in 1904
Back then, the house had servants quarters.
On the back upstairs balcony there was a large
porcelain funnel shaped bowl, inside a wooden box with a hinged lid.
The bowl drained via a down pipe to an open spoon drain which ran out to
the stormwater drains in the street.
It was the maids job back then (pre sewerage ) to empty the 5 upstairs bedroom chambers pots
into this.
Around 40 years ago, not long after we bought the house, one of our then teenage daughters
( goodness knows why ) lit a small fire in it, and it cracked and broke.
We were very cross with her at the time, as although it was obviously no longer used,
it was of historic interest and importance.
