    yes median house prices were 78k in Melbourne back in 1985. A bit less then 4x average yearly wage, and easily doable if single or spouse is working and no kids on an average wage.
    I bought my fist house in a rural town for 86k on a 24k a year wage btw.

    But median house prices now are 8x average wage but it's also not as simple as that as median house prices are now skewed due to all the apartments/town house and unit subdivisions, for your 8x average wage you will not get a 3 bedroom house with a garage and an back yard these days, more like a half decent apartment of a poor quality town house with no back yard on a tiny bit of land.

    Anyway not trying to have a go at you personally and agree times were tougher in living expenses back then, but all my arguments are about property.
