barry....its actually a myth.
Much better to lift a heavy weight very slowly to warm up the muscle for the weight it is about to lift.
Pointless lifting the light weight first....waste of time.
The muscle needs to know what the resistance will be before it knows what it will be if u know what i mean.
You may as well go for a jog to warm up.
Lifting the light weight does nothing to teach your muscles what its about to do.
All it does is teaches the muscle to lift light weights and then when u go to lift the heavy weight it struggles.
How can a light weight warm your muscle up enough to then be hit by a heavy weight if it hasnt lifted it yet?
That is how damage is caused to the muscle and you cant move your arm for 3 days.
it also then reduces the abilitly of the muscle to grow at the rate it could if you just left the light weight on the ground.
Lift slowly with the heavy weight followed by lifting heavy weight.....simple as that.
Amongst other things Ive had a gym or 2 and played footy (Aussie Rules) at a high grade while studying sports science.
cheers
