I am not sure about NZ, but I think the problem is our politicians are too removed from the electorate and live in a bubble surrounded by staff. As electorates have got bigger and politicians get more staff to handle the workload, the quality of their decisions has gone down. I don't think this is a coincidence.
Let's get rid of all the staff and have more politicians to do all the work. Every politicians should be answering their own phone and letters and campaigning by getting out and talking to voters. Make the electorates small enough and which party you belong to will matter less than your character and record.
