Just to give you an idea of how important the position Australia holds in the international academic arena is, a comparison bet. Us and the USA which occupies every years the #1 spot. Australia's population is less than 1/14 of the US population which means, were we to compare populations numbers and Universities, we would have 198 (!!!) in the top 200 (the Americans have 54) universities Wold wide..... Of-course the above comparison is hypothetical. however, it shows how impressively we stand in the world of academia around the world.....
