Albanese speaks with Chinese premier in precursor to possible Xi meeting
Phnom Penh: Anthony Albanese has met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, the highest level face-to-face encounter between an Australian prime minister and Chinese leader for three years.
Albanese’s informal discussion with Li, during a gala dinner at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Cambodia, is a precursor to a possible meeting later this week between Albanese and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Albanese spoke to Li, who is second in command in the Communist Party of China’s leadership hierarchy, for approximately four minutes via interpreters.
The prime minister’s office said Albanese and Li spoke about the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Australia among other topics during the encounter, which was captured on video.
