China intends to belittle America. Read up on how Japan intended to do the same. Being small did not mean that you would be overlooked.

I was born during the war and grew up hating the Japanese, but times change and now see them as a solid ally.

I'm sorry to hear you grew up hating the Japanese. All that hatred surely are not good for your health. I hope you no longer have hatred for any human being based on their race or nationality. You'll be more happy that way. I used to have many Japanese colleagues in Singapore, they are lovely people.
